Update: Sambhali Sarai Is Fully Operational
As discussed in the Fall 2024 newsletter, Sambhali Trust opened a new project called Sarai, which means “resting place.” Located in the heart of Jodhpur, the Sarai building beautifully illustrates Sambhali’s goal of providing holistic support for the community it serves.
Sarai was originally envisioned as an emergency shelter for survivors of gender-based violence and individuals facing family rejection, including women and members of the LGBTQ+ community, and this vital need remains the heart of Sarai.
The facility also includes an Empowerment Center and a Primary Education Center providing education and vocational training to both those in need of shelter and the surrounding neighborhood.
In November, Sambhali Cafe and Boutique opened in Sarai’s historic 200-year-old building. It is Rajasthan’s first cafe fully run by LGBTQ+ individuals. Overlooking the dramatic Mehrangarh Fort, the rooftop cafe provides patrons with a stunning view and local delicacies–and its employees with a safe and accepting space to earn a living. On the way up, visitors can stop at the Sambahli Boutique and purchase beautiful hand-made items made by graduates of Sambhali’s Empowerment Centers who are now earning their livelihood through sewing and embroidery.
In addition, newly instituted Sambhali Walks provide visitors to Jodhpur with a tour of the old town that focuses on the role of women and water in Jodhpur’s history, as well as the stories of Sambhali, spreading the word to travelers from around the world.
This combination of programs would surely seem unusual in the U.S. but here, under the skilled leadership of Sambhali staff, the programs support and provide strength and protection to each other. Together Sarai is a resting place and a place of great courage and hope.
